Developed during the current solar maximum, [SUN]Flower Plasma is an evolving media installation and participatory performance that juxtaposes the complexity of the plasma machine with the intelligence of the sunflower, bridging the micro and the macro. In collaboration with plasma physicist Dr. Walter Gekelman, who recorded Alfvén waves in UCLA’s plasma facility, and biomedical engineer Dr. Haley Marks, who captured microscopic sunflower imagery, the work translates scientific data into sound, light, and vibration. The work reveals correspondences between cosmic and biological forms of energy. Supported by the NEA and nominated for the 2025 Ars Electronica S+T+ARTS Prize, [SUN]Flower Plasma invites collective attunement to the shared frequencies of living and stellar matter. It reflects on how energy and nourishment—solar, biological, and social—intertwine, asking how our understanding of vitality and sustenance might evolve amid ecological disruption and social upheaval.
