Noise Aquarium is an interactive immersive installation that places audience members at the center of a projected 3D ocean environment, implicating all of us in the fragile ecology of marine life. Created frm microscopic scans and 3D models of plankton, the work magnifies these vital organisms that produce up to 80% of Earth’s oxygen and are endangered by noise pollution from oil drilling, tourist boats, overfishing, and the creation of microplastics—the destructive forces of consumption we rarely see. The layered soundscape, based on underwater acoustic data, immerses viewers in this unseen violence while surrounding them with fragile forms of light and motion. Participants encounter plankton—the bottom of the food chain—up close, and hear the whale—the top—only when completely still. This embodied stillness becomes a meditation on responsibility, revealing how human activity reverberates through the ocean’s sonic life and how awareness begins in silence.
