Bhopal Christmas

Bhopal Christmas 1985 was a personal video art project exhibited internationally from 1985 to 1992, including festivals and symposia in Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, and Turkey.

After the Bhopal disaster, I wondered why the decorations were up, Christmas shopping was going on as if nothing happened. I was an intern in Andy Warhol’s silk screening studio in Tribeca, working under horrible conditions. The mask I wear is from the studio because we had no good ventilation in the basement. The cat I am carrying was Robert Davis’s — my best friend who would eventually succumb to AIDS…. I walked around as a ghost of Bhopal — first on the Bowery and then uptown… no one asked me to do this, I just needed to show up — silently. 30+ years later — the consequences are still there. I am reminded of this terrible tragedy every Christmas.
