NSF Grant with Charles Taylor: Acoustic Sensor Arrays for Understanding Bird Communication

Charles Taylor, Chuck, is an inspiring person and a great scientist who also happens to be a black belt. He was brave enough to put myself and Takashi Ikegami into his grant proposal and we are starting work on developing an art | sci project informed by the research on environmental and social interactions / communication of birds.
The proposal combines the knowledge and tools of engineers, linguists and biologists to decipher the structure and meaning of bird songs -- including those of American robins, thrashers and grosbeaks. This collaboration between biologists, linguists, engineers and artists will result in a much richer understanding of bird songs, and an understanding the use of computational methods to answer questions about science and nature.

Microwave International New Media Arts Festival ALCHEMY

    October 29th - Nov 26th
Hong Kong has been an amazing experience for me – I found myself in the Microwave festival overlapping with the grand opening of the School of Creative Media where I happen to be a Visiting Professor. I was invited here because they are starting a bachelors degree in art and science which made it possible to bring out Siddharth Ramakrishnan and Romie Littrell. It just so happened that at the very same time Adam Stieg was attending a conference on NanoMedicine in Shenzen which is an hour away from Hong Kong. So, in addition to having our work shown in the festival, I organized a panel on the New Generation of Scientists at the School of Creative Media. Many kudos to Jeffrey Shaw who supported this and Hector Rodriguez too. Website

BLUE MORPH / WATER BOWLS / Art Sci collaborations: HOX ZODIAC / SNIFFING BOOTH

A strange overlap of time and place in exhibitions – my work was shown in three churches in the past few months. At one point, BLUE MORPH was in St John the Divine in Gdansk, Poland and St Cornelius chapel at Governor’s Island in New York. The overlap lasted three days. Then, BLUE MORPH at Governor’s island overlapped with Water Bowls at the cathedral of St John the Divine – for three days. I am not sure what all this means, but I am humbled to see the work in spiritual context as this is my deep conviction – art, science and spirituality need to come together in ways that empower people who partake in the experience of the space created.
