Gastronomy beyond Earth — imagined for space tourists, rehearsed by those on Earth
Invited by curator Dobrila Denegri to participate in PERFORMING Fest in Catanzaro, Calabria. I proposed to develop an idea that has been brewing for three years now and the timing is perfect. GOLD is at a record high in the hisotry of humanity and the absurdities of the rich going into space as tourists in the midst of wars are higher than ever.
The performance is in four acts with participatory with VIP “tasters” on stage and the audience below.
For the past four days, I am working with 10 students and a local catering company (Orbital!) to develop the participatory performance. Yesterday we tested the sequence of events and I am getting excited at the direction this is taking! Today the chef came up with their interpretaitons of the four scenes: ACT 1: Cosmic Gold // ACT 2: Gold Rush // ACT 3: ATOMIC GOLD // ACT 4: SPACE TOURISTS. Each act is connected to a spice ‘worth it’s weight in gold” — 1. sapphron (currently more expensive than gold). 2. Black pepper — (bought with gold by Romans and others) 3. Nutmeg (Manhattan exchanged for island with nutmeg farms) 4. Cardammon (Queen of spices). Participants will be tasting the food created with the ingredients while I tell them stories about gold from space, greed, geopolitics and myth. Event bite is covered with gold leaf that has no calories or nutritional value. We are tasting a menu that will be offered to the space tourists along with two objects I will offer on commission — gold robot dog and atomic prints.
